Australia's Anglican law-makers have given the nod
to an official three-year church debate on homosexuality.
Delegates at the 12th General Synod in Brisbane have commended a landmark report by the church's leading theologians into the treatment of same-sex couples. The delegates have called on the synod's standing committee to encourage study of the document and report back at the next synod in three years. The report has been prepared by the Anglican Doctrine Panel, a national body of learned clergy and scholars. The panel has affirmed promiscuity is contrary to the Christian ideal of committed, monogamous relationships but has also criticised irrational fear of homosexuality. Panel member Reverend CATHY THOMPSON says responsible reflection on the question of homosexuality and the church is needed, with the involvement of gay and lesbian people on the rise in the church. Reverend THOMPSON says there's no absolutely clear interpretation of the bible concerning homosexuality. |
