Seven to appeal Marsden payout

CHANNEL Seven is to appeal today's $525,000 defamation award to Sydney solicitor John Marsden.

The network's legal team said it had identified several grounds for appeal in the judgment which they would be pursuing at the earliest opportunity.

"Seven does not resile from the decision to broadcast the two stories or its decision to defend the cases in the way it did," spokesman Ian Angus said.

NSW Supreme Court judge Justice David Levine today said Channel Seven had been motivated by malice to make false imputations about Mr Marsden.

He ruled Mr Marsden had a good and settled reputation before Channel Seven's publication of the imputations, which suggested he had sex with underage boys.

A ruling on costs in the long-running case is still awaited.
