A Sydney professor whose research is improving understanding of cancer and HIV/AIDS has won the 2001 Commonwealth Minister's Award for Excellence in Health and Medical Research.

Associate Professor PHILIP HOGG, 39, from the University of New South Wales, received a medal and $50,000 for outstanding individual achievement in his research.

Federal Health Minister Dr MICHAEL WOOLDRIDGE says professor HOGG is challenging traditional thinking, and his research has important implications for the treatment of cancer, HIV/AIDS and thrombosis.

Professor HOGG is demonstrating that disulfide bonds in some secreted proteins often can be rearranged, and that this re-arrangement can change how the proteins work. Dr WOOLDRIDGE made the announcement at the Australian Society for Medical Research's annual dinner.
