Vic Libs dump gays

Shadow attorney-general Robert Dean has accused the gay and lesbian community of "lies, intimidation and deceitful conduct".

Dr Dean, who has campaigned against the government's gay rights reforms, said he and his wife received a flood of abusive calls last weekend while celebrating their 15th wedding anniversary and her birthday.

"There were aggressive threats, both political and personal, and sexual references which shocked me and hurt my wife incredibly," he said.

"This disgraceful behaviour has completely destroyed my faith and view of the gay and lesbian community."

Gay groups have accused him and the Liberals of betrayal after the party announced it would block the Statute Law Amendment (Relationships) Bill.

Also Foundation president Adam Pickvance has said Dr Dean told gay groups he was confident he could sway his party.

Dr Dean said: "That is a lie and I will not work with him until he apologises."

The Government plans to introduce four amendments next month, including two changes to the definition of child.

Mr Pickvance said Dr Dean said that if his worries were addressed, he could persuade his party to support the Bill.
